Deep Set Eyes In Bad Lighting

Zondagsopening in Enschede, the Netherlands

I'm going back to the "controversial" subject to open stores on Sunday (earlier post can be found here: Koopzondag ). This time the present situation in Enschede.

mentioned earlier, that only in some cities, shops may be open on Sunday. After lengthy discussions, the municipality of Enschede has decided that people go hand and allow you to open one specific group of stores on Sunday. In this way supermarkets (and only They) got the green light for Sunday trading in restricted hours (16.00-20.00). Not all supermarkets have benefited from this law, and those that are open, offer more products with the remnants of last week. These remnants are often, however, hope for students who departed for the weekend outside the city, returned on Sunday and found an empty fridge ...
But, but ... so-called " zondagsopening " of course, met with a series of protests that the passive form (posters, websites) are still continuing.

poster that hangs in every store in the mall Deppenbroek:
/ museum /
"See wnuczku! Have previously bought fresh bread at the bakery. "
"What is a bakery, Grandma?"

Small, independent stores they feel threatened. They are afraid that open on Sunday supermarkets lure their customers, who have not yet shopped on Monday. Therefore, the opponents' zondagsopening "subscribe to the petition " tegen verruiming "(pronounced against the extension to all Sundays), which at this moment is up ... 32,768 signatures. This petition is unlikely to have a chance of being examined by Tweede Kamer, but it serves to perpetuate the debate and, sometimes, for topping up fuel to the fire.

arguments of opponents, which can be found on this site are as follows:
  • Most entrepreneurs do not want (or can not) work the whole 52 weeks after 7 days a week.
  • staff, many entrepreneurs do not want (or not) to work on Sundays.
  • From a competition standpoint, more stores / supermarkets will be forced to open at a time when others would do so (more cost, less turnover ...).
  • increasingly unfair competition will lead to the disappearance of independent companies.
  • shareholders because of the enlargement will impose more obligations related to opening shop.
  • extension "will force" shops municipalities to provide relief.
  • extension does not increase circulation. Euro can be spent only once. It is therefore no question of shifting the time of sale.
  • Employment growth in retail trade remains far behind the average growth of jobs despite the opening of shops on Sunday.
  • environment is more polluted.
  • costs to be borne by the municipality, have risen at a 7-day opening.
argue with these arguments, I will not. Just that this Dutch deal:) I'll just add that we shop on Sundays from time to time we do and do not want to re-closure of the supermarket that day.

Some argue, others combine. Examples are shops Blokker and Kruidvat (something like our Rossmann), who are looking for ways in which to register the KvK (Kamer van Koophandel ) under the same number under which the now there are supermarkets. A way question whether effective;)
